The practical objectives of ICET-A are to encourage and guide endocrinefollow up of multi-transfusedpatients in developed anddeveloping countries, to promote and supportcollaborative research in this field, and to educate and train endocrinologists, paediatricians and other physicians in theprevention and management ofthe growth and endocrine complications in these patients.

This is in agreement with a fundamental requirement of medical ethics, that “Any progress we make in research into growth disorders and endocrinecomplications in thalassaemia should be passed on to all those suffering fromsuch disorders”.

On the 8th of May, 2009 in Ferrara (Italy) the International Network onEndocrine Complications in Thalassaemia(I-CET) was founded. From March 2014, the I-CET acronym has changed and beenextended to International Network of Clinicians for Endocrinopathies in Thalassemiaand Adolescent Medicine (ICET-A)
We hope our effort will be useful for all those who are taking care ofthalassaemic patients with growth disorders and endocrine complications.

On behalf of the global Thalassaemia family and the Board of Directors of Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF), we are privileged and honoured to be given the opportunity to address with the ICET-A web – a new exciting initiative that complements the work of ICET-A and its impressive contribution to the global medical and scientific community in the field of haemoglobin disorders.

It will, however, be a great omission not to refer, in particular, to its creator, the man who had the vision, Professor Vincenzo de Sanctis to whom we pay our deepest and most sincere respect and appreciation. His lifelong and invaluable contribution in the very special field of endocrinology in thalassaemia has, and continues to be invaluable in every respect.

We hadthe pleasure to meet Professor de Sanctis early in his career as a young doctorand a professor and during all these years of our acquaintance we havewitnessed his consistent, undiverted passion and outstanding work in this field.Furtherto his capacity as a scientist and a doctor of exceptional calibre, Professorde Sanctis is considered by all of us in the global thalassaemia family as atrue gentleman who has managed to build and maintain strong and sincererelations and collaborations with numerous medical specialists from all aroundthe world.

Withoutany hesitation the global Thalassaemia family is greatly indebted also to eachand every member of the ICET-A team who have managed, through their work andcollaborative spirit, to achieve huge and immense advances in the area ofendocrinology in the field of thalassaemia and undoubtedly they will continueto impress.

It wouldbe our pleasure to contribute to this initiative.
Wishingyou all the best.
